Dear Colleagues,

The Research Center for Astronomy of the Academy of Athens will host an International Workshop on "Galaxies and Chaos. Theory and Observations" in Athens, in September 2002. This workshop will gather senior scientists and young researchers
with an excellent record of research. It will cover the need for a review of the latest advancements in the research for
Galaxies and Chaos.

Please find attached the first announcement and registration
form. If you are interested in attending the event, please
fill in the attached form and send it to:

First Announcement

International Workshop on
GALAXIES AND CHAOS. THEORY AND OBSERVATIONS
16-19 September 2002, Athens, Greece

Organized by the
Research Center for Astronomy of the Academy of Athens

1. SCIENTIFIC CONTENT

Presentations will cover four main topics, while a review panel
will take place during the last day. The main topics are:

- Formation and Evolution of Galaxies
- Order and Chaos in Galaxies
- Chaotic Dynamics. Methods and Tools
- Distribution Functions

The improvement of observational and computational power made
it feasible to address several important problems of galactic
dynamics. Such problems are, for example, the estimation of
galactic potentials from photometric observations, the
reproduction of the detailed kinematics and the investigation
of the role of chaos near particular resonances (e.g. the
corrotation region) of disk galaxies and of its influence in
the observed morphology. Similarly, important questions
regarding 3D galactic systems are the role of chaos in
elliptical galaxies and the dynamics of bulges with or
without a black hole.

The workshop will provide an overview of the recent progress
made in the above fields. In addition, it will assess the most
important new directions for research opened within the
framework of joint scientific projects that are presently
feasible due to the significant increase of observational and
computational resources.
